Henare O'Keefe

In the words of Dame Whina Cooper, “Take care of our children. Take care of what they hear, take care of what they see, take care of what they feel. For how the children grow, so will be the shape of Aotearoa.”

This guiding belief is embodied by our 2024 ‘Leader of the Year’, who has spent over 15 years uplifting his community serving the Hastings District as a dedicated Councillor. Tirelessly advocating for the well-being of Flaxmere, this leader’s passion and creative initiatives have ignited positive change. From leading hikoi to improve community safety, to founding the annual Flaxmere Hero’s Calendar, celebrating local champions, he has continually demonstrated a deep commitment to his people.

Driven by a strong resolve to address and reverse negative social trends, he has mentored youth, championed family violence prevention, and supported the reintegration of former prisoners. He founded the Flaxmere Boxing Academy in 2012 which fosters strength and character among rangatahi. Initiatives like the TunuTunu mobile BBQ and the Flaxmere Community Garden have provided nourishment and strengthened community connections.

Alongside his late wife, he has fostered over 200 children, changing the course of many lives, including that of Phillip Rhodes, who has gone on to become a world-renowned opera singer. His role as Hastings Ambassador is marked by his vibrant presence, cultural pride, and unwavering support for the community.

We are proud to honour Henare O’Keefe as this year’s Leader of the Year, a true embodiment of love, leadership, and service.
